The results are striking. The median annual income for astronomers in the United States is $80,000. That’s less than half the median income for scientists in the United States, who earn $175,000. (The median is the middle number in a distribution of incomes. Half the people earn more than the median, half less.
Who are the modern astronomers?

On a recent day, a NASA astronomer named Anna Stecher was standing on a rooftop in a suburban Washington, D.C., office park, surveying the sky. She was wearing a white lab coat and a headset, and she was looking for a faint object that had recently been spotted in the constellation of Taurus.
Stecher, who is also a graduate student at the University of Maryland, is part of a team that is studying the possibility that a distant planet, or perhaps a star, is tugging on a nearby star called Beta Tauri. The planet, if it exists, would be about the size of Jupiter, and it would be about 20 light-years away.
The planet would be a long way from Earth, but that’s not the only thing that would make it unusual. The planet is a brown dwarf, a small object that is too massive to be a star but too small to be a planet.
Stecher was standing on the roof of a building that is part of the Goddard Space Flight Center, the headquarters of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. The building is on the campus of the University of Maryland, and it is called the Goddard Research Center.
