The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has published its latest data on job growth in the U.S. economy. The data for 2011 show a slight decline in the number of new jobs, but a significant rise in the number of people working in the U.S. economy.
The BLS data show that the economy created 2.2 million jobs in 2011, a decline of about 600,000 from the 2.8 million jobs created in 2010. However, the number of people working in the economy rose to 154.9 million, up 2.2 million from the 151.7 million people working in 2010.
The employment-population ratio rose to 59.9 percent in 2011, a 1.8 percentage point increase from the 58.1 percent of people working in the economy in 2010. The unemployment rate for 2011 was 8.2 percent, down from 9.5 percent in 2010.
The BLS data also show that the number of new jobs created in 2011 was concentrated in a few industries, including professional and business services, health care, and construction.
The professional and business services sector added 1.2 million jobs, the largest number of new jobs in the economy. Health care added 1.1 million jobs, while construction added 1.1 million jobs.
