How do I get a job in human rights?

The answer is simple: you don’t. But it’s also a bit of a trick question, because you can’t really get a job in human rights without being a human rights lawyer.

The most obvious reason for this is that the vast majority of human rights lawyers are employed by the United Nations, the European Union, or the governments of the countries they work in. There are a handful of other organisations that employ human rights lawyers, but they tend to be small and highly specialised.
But there’s another reason why human rights lawyers are employed by the UN, the EU, and the governments of the countries they work in: they’re not really lawyers.
I’ve been a human rights lawyer for almost two decades, and I’ve never met a human rights lawyer who was a lawyer. Most of them are academics, or policy experts, or journalists.
Human rights lawyers are lawyers who specialise in human rights law. They are trained in the law, but they also have a deep understanding of the history of human rights, the politics of human rights, and the impact of human rights on the lives of the people they’re trying to help.
The reason that human rights lawyers are not lawyers is because they’re not allowed to practise law in most countries. In most countries, the only way to become a lawyer is to complete a law degree.
