The answer is no. But, it is a highly-trained professional who is qualified to diagnose hearing loss and provide appropriate treatments and services to restore hearing.

Hearing loss is one of the most common health problems. It is estimated that more than 50 percent of the population over the age of 60 has some degree of hearing loss. If you are one of those who have been diagnosed with hearing loss, you should know that there are several types of hearing loss.
Types of Hearing Loss
There are two main types of hearing loss:
Sensorineural hearing loss
Conductive hearing loss
This type of hearing loss is also known as “hard of hearing”. It is the most common type of hearing loss. Sensorineural hearing loss is caused by damage to the inner ear. This is the part of the ear that is responsible for converting sound waves into nerve impulses. It is also the part of the ear that is responsible for converting the nerve impulses into sounds.
The damage to the inner ear is usually caused by a traumatic event or a disease. The damage can be permanent or temporary. The damage can also be caused by aging.

Do audiologists remove ear wax?

The answer to this question is not an easy one. On the one hand, wax can be a nuisance. It can interfere with hearing by making the ear canal too tight, which in turn can affect hearing. On the other hand, wax is important for hearing. Without it, the ear canal would become so clogged that the tympanic membrane (ear drum) would not be able to vibrate normally and would not be able to produce sound.

A recent study (Koski et al, 2010) suggests that wax removal is not a good idea. The study included children who had otitis media (ear infection) and were given ear drops to treat the infection. The researchers wanted to see if ear drops were helpful, and to find out if ear drops and wax removal were related.
The study involved 1,238 children, all under the age of 6 years. Each child was examined by an otolaryngologist (an ear, nose and throat specialist). The children were given ear drops and then checked again at the end of 2 weeks. The children were also asked if they had been given ear drops and if their ears were cleaned, and they were asked about ear problems.
Of the children, 6.3% had ear wax problems. About one-third of these children had an ear infection. There was no relationship between the ear infection and ear wax problems. There was a relationship between ear infection and ear cleaning.

Can audiologists perform surgery?

The answer is yes, but the question is what kind of surgery. In the past, audiologists have been involved in hearing aid fitting and placement, but over the past ten years, they have also been increasingly involved in other procedures that are now considered otologic surgery. Otologic surgery is surgery of the ear, including the middle and inner ear.

Audiologists are well-suited to perform otologic surgery because of their training in the anatomy of the ear and the hearing process. Audiologists also have excellent communication skills, as well as a background in medical history and physical examination. Audiologists are trained to listen to the ear, evaluate the ear, and have the ability to explain otologic findings to patients.
Otologic surgery is performed to correct hearing problems, as well as to improve the appearance of the ear. Audiologists perform hearing tests to determine the degree of hearing loss and to determine the appropriate hearing aid or cochlear implant.
An otolaryngologist (ear, nose, and throat doctor) is the surgeon who performs otologic surgery. Audiologists are well-suited to perform hearing tests because of their training in the anatomy of the ear and the hearing process.
