Can an employer dictate where you work remotely?

The answer is yes, but not in the way you might think.

With the coronavirus pandemic causing mass layoffs and a global economic slowdown, many workers are wondering what they can do to stay employed. While most employers are offering some form of remote work, it’s not always clear what’s allowed and what’s not.
In a recent survey of more than 1,000 workers, nearly three-quarters of respondents said they’re at least somewhat concerned about the impact the coronavirus pandemic is having on their jobs, and more than half said they’ve been asked to work remotely. But the survey also found that more than half of those workers said they’ve been given the option of working remotely, and about a third said their employer has required them to work remotely.
That means, for some, the coronavirus pandemic is creating an opportunity to get a job in a new way. But the legal and practical hurdles to doing so are considerable.
